Florida Keys Sailors Enjoy A Nip Of Pusser's

Commodore's Regatta Winners proudly display their Pusser's prizes

The Upper Keys Sailing Club, located on Buttonwood Sound in Key Largo, Florida, held its annual Commodore's Regatta on the weekend of February 18/19 and Pussers was there to ease the proceedings along.

The weather was perfect for the Commodore's Regatta on the bayside. Eight Portsmouth boats raced Saturday and nine PHRF boats raced on Sunday. Results for Saturday's race were: first place, Tom Trump (Force 5); second place, Dave White (Hobie Wave); and third place, Jim Signor (JY15). The wind strength was 10-15 knots out of the North East and three races with a distance of 1.5 nm were completed each day.

Following the day of racing, a "spectacular" dinner was catered by club member Mike O'Connor, David Schneider of the Key Players provided a great mix of music and Pusser's provided a Pusser's ® Rum Pour. "The Pusser's Rum Pour brought a lot of people into the club Saturday night. We now have a bunch of members specifically requesting Pusser's, so we are going to stock it from now on," said commodore Carol Norman.

Sunday was another perfect day for racing on Buttonwood Sound. The PHRF race results were: A Fleet - Dick Slosar on his Melges 24 (High Yield) and his crew Sharon Slosar and Jim & Cheryl Signor. Second place: Jerry Creasman on his Melges 24 (Aiemef) and his crew, Helen Creasman and Wes and Karen Tone. Juan Soriano placed third in his J-28 (October) with crew Ginette Hughes and Pat McLaughlin. B Fleet results were; first place, Cris Sandifer O'Day 25 (Mischief), second place Mike Kramer Nonsuch 33 (Backdraft) and third place Larry Thorson, Nonsuch 26 (Robin).

Trophy presentation was held after the racing on Sunday. Winners were awarded the unique Pusser's® Rum ceramics as trophies. "Our racers raced hard in hopes of receiving these great prizes. However, John McLeod on his Hunter 28 (Joi Toi) was awarded a rum filled trophy for being the "Last Boat to Finish," said Carol.

Did you know? In earlier years on British ships, the "scuttled butt" was an open (scuttled) fresh-water cask (or butt) on ship decks from which issues of the daily tot of grog were served. As a gathering point to exchange daily rumors, the term "scuttlebutt" took on the meaning of gossip aboard ship.
