Mahogany Memories Revisited

 On Saturday, July 12th, the Southern New England Chapter of The Antique and Classic Boat Society celebrated their 24th annual “Mahogany Memories” boat show, with an extended Pussers Cocktail hour.

The Show actually started on Friday afternoon under beautiful sunny skies with guests asking for a preliminary Pussers Painkiller/Navy Grog Party in anticipation of the “real” Pussers Cocktail Party on Saturday night.  Bartenders Patty and Cliff McGuire were able to hold off the crowds until Saturday at 5:30pm when, with the help of two more bartenders, Ann-Marie and Ed Dombroskas, the four of them were able to satiate the thirst of the crowd of Painkiller admirers.

With absolutely perfect weather, and the highest count ever of 50 vintage antique and classic wooden and fiberglass boats, with sizes ranging from 12’ to 62’ long, the Southern New England Chapter experienced a perfect show.

At 5:30 on Saturday evening, following the Show, Pussers Rum sponsored a Painkiller Cocktail Party at The Connecticut River Museum that surpassed all the previous ones, by far.  

In fact, by 4 o’clock, the bartenders were being prodded, cajoled, teased, and almost bribed to open the Painkiller Party early. They managed to hold off, and it made the festivities even more meaningful. A fantastic time was had by all.

By doubling their bartender force, the four of them were able to enjoy the party as much as the invited guests. At 7, the bar was secured and dinner was served. A great time was enjoyed by everyone, and, once again, the biggest question of the Party was, “Where can I buy this Painkiller mix here in Connecticut, or even New England?” That question summarizes how many converts to Pussers and Painkillers have been made in the past few years.

Once again Pussers provided the Southern new England Chapter with the trophies handed out for the four coveted awards: Best in Show; Preserved, Best in Show; Restored, “Peoples” Choice; and Judges” Choice.

With the loss of two of long time chapter members this past year, the show was dedicated to the memory of Barry White and Melinda (Mel) McGurl; the families and loved ones of those two faithful members were each presented with a Pussers Decanter – a very fitting tribute to both. Both families were truly moved to be given such lovely mementos.

Pussers Rum has become synonymous with the Mahogany Memories Boat Show. “One just goes with the other,” said Cliff McGuire. “With next year being our 25th Anniversary, already we are being asked about the Pussers party. Ah, there is nothing like a totally satisfied customer!”
